Karja Painting Inc. was founded by my grandfather, Donald Karja Sr., who was a US Marine Corp, WWII Veteran. After his service, Don decided to learn the skilled trades of Painting and Wall Papering. He pursued an education locally at Dunwoody in the Twin Cities and worked as a Union Painter during the late 1940's and 50's. In the late 50's, he decided to utilize his talent and experience to go out on his own and form his first painting business, Don Karja Painting.
It was this business that gave him the opportunity to personalize his craft and differentiate within an industry that was growing towards quantity of production and not quality. Don Sr. prided himself in quality work that he liked to describe using his motto "Old World Craftsmanship". Over the 1960's, Don Sr. built his reputation as a top Minnesota painter in both the commercial and residential markets.
In the 1970's, while Don Sr. continued to grow the business, he was offered and accepted an instructor position at North Hennepin Technical College for his craft.
